Recommended encoding settings
Your media library will accept almost every commonly used video and audio format. However, before you start encoding your video or audio file, we recommend using the settings in these notes to ensure there are no problems with upload or playback.
Video files (showreels)
We would recommend using 25 FPS (frames per second) as your default frame rate as it is the standard used in the UK and Europe. Your media library will accept videos edited and encoded using 30p or 24p if you have a lot of American work. However, if you are cutting them together with UK footage shot at 25 frames per second, we would recommend converting them properly to avoid dropped frames in the final video.
If you have the option, we recommend selecting 'De-Interlace' when exporting your video. This may be referred to as 'Progressive'. This helps prevent issues such as 'combing', which causes the video image to break up when it is scaled to a different resolution.
Variable bit rate
If you have the option to set a variable bit rate we would suggest that you do. It is linked to the following point.
Multi-pass/ 2-pass encoding
If you have the option when exporting a file in MP4 or MOV format, we recommend using multi-pass or 2-pass encoding. This will slow the encoding process a lot, but the resulting video quality will be much higher.
Uncompressed audio codec
Using an uncompressed audio codec may cause audio sync issues. Please see below for our recommendations.
Recommended encoding settings for video files
|Audio codec||Audio |
|Audio sample frequency||Typical file size of 5 mins|
|.MP4 / .M4V / .MOV||H.264||16:9||640x360||2000-3000 kbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||70 - 130 Mb|
|960x540||3-7 Mbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||100 - 300 Mb|
|1280x720||4 - 9 Mbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||100 - 300 Mb|
|1920x1080||6 - 12 Mbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||220 - 400 Mb|
|.MP4 / .M4V / .MOV||H.264||4:3||640x480||2000-3000 kbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||70 - 130 Mb|
|960x720||4 - 9 Mbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||100 - 300 Mb|
|1440x1080||6 - 12 Mbps||MPEG 4 AAC||160-256 kbps||44.1kHz||220 - 400 Mb|
Please note you cannot upload files over 1GB to your media library. We recommend that you do not use raw Digital Video and instead select from the alternative encoding settings listed above or send it to us for upload on your behalf.
Audio files (voice reels)
Your media library will accept most audio formats, but we would recommend encoding your voice reels (audio only) into one of the following formats:
We recommend you use 16bit, 48Khz, 256kbps compression (for MP3, M4A, AAC, WMA)
