The Spotlight Link

Membership of Spotlight means that every performer has a web page, a book page and access to the Spotlight Link.

What is The Spotlight Link / The Spotlight Link Board?

The Link is the UK's most popular casting information service, used daily by industry professionals to send out their latest casting requirements to agents, and directly to performers.

Who is eligible to receive casting information via The Spotlight Link / The Spotlight Link Board?

Spotlight Link Board feeds are available only to members of our actors, actresses, presenters and dancers directories.
If you are a member of Spotlight Graduates, you will be invited to view jobs on the Spotlight Link Board after Easter.
Casting information for child and young performer clients is only sent via an agent / representative. It is not sent directly to individuals or their parents.

How do casting professionals use it?

Casting professionals have the choice to

  • send out a casting breakdown to agents via the Spotlight Link or
  • post roles to the Spotlight Link Board to all agents and all performers, regardless of agency status

The post is a summary of the production, the role required and other key information including casting, rehearsal and performance dates.

Do all performers receive the same casting information?

Yes. Roles posted to the Spotlight Link Board can be seen by all adult performers and all agents. Children & Young Performers do not have access to the Spotlight Link Board; posts are only seen by their agents.

How can I receive casting information and can I filter what I see?

You can access all Spotlight Link Board information once you are logged in to your account. Here you can set your preferences about how you wish to receive job information using the 'My Tools and Settings' feature. This will allow you to

  • Browse a feed of casting opportunities via your personal Spotlight homepage
  • Receive role-by-role job alerts
  • Filter jobs by gender, age, ethnicity, height and pay category
  • Set personalised email preferences

The Spotlight Link Board

A member's Link Board is split into three tabs: 'Matching my filter', 'All paid' and 'All Opportunities'. The default view is 'Matching my filter'.

The 'All paid' section contains information about roles which are paid Equity minimum or equivalent, above Equity minimum, on the BBC / Equity agreement, or paid at on overseas rate.

The 'All opportunities' section contains information about roles which are profit-share, expenses-only, unpaid, or paid at a non-Equity rate.

'Matching my filter' is the section where you can decide which types of roles you wish to see, depending on your gender, age range, production type or pay category. 'Matching my settings' is the default view on your Spotlight Link Board page. For information on setting up your filters, see the 'How do I set my filters?' section below.

I do not have an agent - how do I respond to a Link Board post?

If you have no agency representation on your Spotlight record (i.e. c/o Spotlight), then you can suggest yourself for a role - see 'How Do I Suggest Myself' below.
A brief summary of all relevant job information can be accessed via your personal homepage on Spotlight. Simply visit www.spotlight.com and log in with your UPDATE PIN, then click on 'Link Board'. Alternatively, this information will also be sent directly to your personal email address. If the job seems relevant to you, click on the link at the bottom of the email and then enter your UPDATE PIN number to read the details in full.

Always, make sure that you are 100% suitable for the role being cast, and that you are available for both the audition and then the production dates. If you are certain you are right for the part, click to submit your Spotlight web CV. This will be sent immediately to the casting professional concerned.

However tempting it may be, there is no point suggesting yourself for a role if you know that you are not right for it. Be selective: if you don't have the skills required then just ignore the breakdown. If you waste a casting director's time they will remember, and may ignore your CV in future.

If I am listed as c/o Spotlight how will I be contacted for general enquiries?

Spotlight will pass on any professional enquiries we receive for you either by telephone, email or SMS. We do not disclose your personal details. We get in touch with you and you can choose whether to respond.
If you are responding to a Link Board post your email address will automatically be available to the recipient. It will be your choice as to what additional contact information you provide.

I have an agent - how do I respond to a Link Board post?

If you have agency representation on your Spotlight record, then your ability to respond to a Link Board post is determined by the 'Client Access' controls set by your agent(s). Any Link Board post will also be seen by your agent(s).
Your agent(s) can choose, on a client by client basis, to allow you to:

  • Suggest yourself directly
  • Nudge your agent(s) so they can submit you for a role you think suitable
  • Read Only, whereby you can view job information but not submit yourself

The default client access setting is 'Read Only'. If you gain new representation you may need to contact your agent to discuss your individual setting with the agency.
If you have multiple agencies listed on your Spotlight record and one of the agencies has set its 'Client Access' controls to 'Read Only' then you will only be able to see Link Board.

If you have multiple agencies and one of the agencies has set its Client Access controls to 'Nudge' and one of the other agencies have set their Client Access controls to 'View Only' then you will be able to notify one of your agents via Spotlight that you're interested in a role - see 'How do I nudge my agent?' below.
If you have multiple agencies and they all set their Client Access controls to 'Full Access' you will be able to submit your own CV for the role - see 'How do I suggest myself?' below.

If your agent has set Client controls to enable you to suggest yourself directly they will be alerted that you have suggested yourself for a role. It is expected that where an agency is listed the casting professional will contact the agency and not you directly.

How do I suggest myself?

At the bottom of each Link Board post, you will be given an option to choose which CV to suggest for the role (Actor, Dancer or Presenter). Make your selection and click through to the next screen and you can write a message to the casting director, select an alternative main photo or select an alternative CV. You must also agree to the Terms of Use.
Once complete, click on the button 'Submit CV'. This CV suggestion, along with your email address, will now appear on the casting professional's Spotlight page when they log in to view suggestions.

Once you have suggested yourself, a tick will appear by the side of the Link Board post on the feed. If you click in to the post you will see a message giving you the time and date of when you made the suggestion, the comments made and the photo you selected.

How do I nudge my agent?

Once you have read the Link Board post and ascertained that you are available and appropriate for the role, click on the link at the bottom of the post. If you have multiple agents who have given you the Nudge setting, you will be asked to select one (to nudge).
Once you have nudged your agent, a nudge icon will appear by the side of the Link Board post on the feed. If you click in to the post you will see a message giving you the time and date of when you nudged your agent.

Should I change my Spotlight record to 'c/o Spotlight' instead of my current agent, so that I can get job information without my agent having any control?

Spotlight does not recommend that you do this, for two reasons:
1. Your agent will be getting more job information than you do directly, because casting professionals often choose to send breakdowns to agents only. So your agent will get these breakdowns as well as the link board posts you would be receiving as a performer. If you choose to be c/o Spotlight, you are limiting the number of jobs you can be suggested for.
2. Your agent's job is to be at their desk, waiting for casting breakdowns to arrive and responding to them immediately. As a performer, you may well be in rehearsals, on tour, attending auditions or just away from your email. If an urgent job comes via Spotlight, your agent can submit you immediately - whereas by the time you get to your computer it may be too late! So it is much better for your agent to handle casting breakdowns on your behalf.

Can I contact the casting professional directly?

Unless otherwise specified, the casting director wants you to submit yourself for roles via the Spotlight Link Board, since this is the easiest way for them to organise performer CVs and shortlists. They do not want to receive hard copy CVs / photos, or to be telephoned or emailed directly. All the information they need is on your Spotlight web CV and in any message you may have included.

Some of the casting information I receive is anonymous. Why?

This is quite normal. Many casting professionals choose not to include their details in casting breakdowns since they don't want to be inundated by responses. If you think you are suitable for the role, submit your CV as normal and then you will be sent more information if you are chosen for audition.

I submitted myself for a casting breakdown but didn't hear anything back. Should I follow this up?

No. Casting directors will only get back to you if they want to invite you to audition. So, if you don't hear back about a job, then it means you weren't successful on that occasion.

If I don't have an email address, or can't access my email?

You can also access job information via your personal homepage on Spotlight. Just visit www.spotlight.com and log in to your account. Then click on the link which says 'Link Board' to see all the recent casting breakdowns you have been sent.

Can I forward Spotlight Link Board posts to other people?

No! Casting information sent out via the Spotlight Link Board is strictly private and confidential and you should never send it to anyone else. You will be asked to agree to this as part of our Terms and Conditions, the first time you use our service. Any performer who is found to be circulating Spotlight casting information to others will immediately have Spotlight Link Board posts suspended.
Casting professionals are choosing to send this information to you, and do not want it to go to anyone else. They want to hire Spotlight members because they know this is a guarantee of quality and professionalism. If the system is abused, casting professionals will cease to use it - and all members of Spotlight will lose out.

How do I set my email alerts?

As well as receiving Link Board posts to your feed, they can also be sent to your Spotlight registered email address. Link Board posts are not sent as individual emails. They are sent as regular hourly email alerts that you can elect to receive as per the following options.

  • Send me hourly email alerts containing all Link Board posts
  • Send me hourly email alerts containing Link Board posts that match my settings
  • Do not send me hourly email alerts

To select which option you would prefer, log in to your performer page then click on 'My Tools and Settings' in the left hand navigation pane. The first function 'Link Board Email Alerts' allows you to select one of the above options. The default setting is 'Do not send me hourly email alerts' so you will need to change this as appropriate.
Please note hourly digest emails will only be sent if a Board post is made to the Link Board.

I was getting email alerts sent to my inbox, but now they have stopped. Why?

Have you have changed email address? you need to let us know by emailing updates@spotlight.com or calling 020 7437 7631.
Have you recently signed with a (new) agent? your agent's 'Client Access' default setting is for you to 'Read Only'. Contact them and ask them to change this to 'nudge' or 'full access'.
Have you opted out of receiving email alerts in 'My Tools and Settings'? This is the default setting and may need to be changed
There are no Link Board posts that match your settings. To change these go to 'My Tools and Settings'
Or, it may just be that a casting professional has not had any recent briefs which are suitable to send directly to performers.

If I receive a Link Board Post via email, how do I suggest myself?

At the bottom of the email will be a link. Click on the link and the Link Board post will automatically open up in your browser. Suggest in the usual way (see How do I suggest myself above). There will be no link to click on in the case of messages.

How do I change my suggestion details or remove the suggestion?

Click on the Link Board post relating to the suggestion you have made. The suggestion appears at the bottom of the post. There are two options. To change the details of the suggestion, click on the 'Change these details' button. Make your required amendments and click on the 'Submit CV' button. These amendments will be made on the suggestion the next time the sender logs in and views their suggestions. To remove the suggestion, click on 'Remove this Suggestion' and then click on 'Confirm'. Your suggestion will no longer appear on the senders list of suggestions when they log in to view them.

How do I set my gender, height, weight, ethnicity and role pay category filters?

To set up your personal filters click on 'My Tools and Settings' in the left hand navigation pane. The second function 'My job filter' allows you to define certain criteria. These criteria are used as filters when viewing Link Board posts on the Spotlight Link Board under the 'Matching My Filter' tab.

For example if you select 'Gender - female only', you will only view Link Board posts relating to roles that are female only in the 'Matching my Settings' feed. If you select a playing age range of 20-30, you will only view Link Board posts relating to roles inclusive of this age range in the 'Matching my Settings' feed. This rule applies to the height range and ethnicity filters. You can set and change any number of these filters at any time.

These filters can also be applied to filtering the Link Board posts you receive by email.

How do I filter the Link Board posts by project type, budget or sender?

Just click on the type, budget or sender and a filter will automatically be created. Add another criteria to refine the filter even more. You can use the filters to search for specific or general types of board posts. To release the filters, click the 'x' beside the filter term at the top of the page.

How do I mark Link Board posts as read or unread?

Just tick the box to the left of the name of the Link Board post(s) and either select 'Mark as read' or 'Mark as unread'. This process will enable you to keep a track on which Link Board posts you have viewed. Any Link Board post you have suggested yourself for will automatically be highlighted as 'Read' and a tick will appear next to the Link Board title.

Can I choose not to receive casting Link Board posts by email?

Of course. You can opt out at any time. Simply log in to www.spotlight.com to update your contact preferences, or e-mail updates@spotlight.com

A casting director has made contact and they want me to audition at a hotel / private address. What should I do?

Call Spotlight immediately on 020 7437 7631 if you have any concerns about the conduct of a casting professional or the audition venue they have invited you to. Reputable casting directors will always use professional premises to audition - such as casting suites or studios.

How can I give feedback?

If you would like to make a general suggestion please email feedback@spotlight.com
