THE MATCHGIRLS by Bill Owen & Tony Russell

Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts (Postgraduate Musical Theatre)

Rhys Thomas

Performances take place at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, N15 4RX

The story focuses on the work and home life of the match cutters at the Bryant and May Factory in the East End where the working conditions were dangerous and dreadful. Brutalised by their bosses and with fines imposed simply for talking on the factory floor, the ‘match girls’ struggle to make ends meet. But one girl, Kate, joins forces with Liberal reformer Annie Besant and, along with George Bernard Shaw, rallies the workforce to strike and eventually score a victory over their employers.

The natural ebullience and robust musicality of the traditional Cockney sparrow combine with the fire and feisty natures of the East End women who changed their world; making this a dramatic, funny, sparkling musical that warms the heart.
