Australia 1787: in the semi-dark hold of a convict ship bound for Australia, the prisoners huddle. A man is flogged on deck. The condemned men and women face a future of fear and despair. Two years later they are rehearsing the first play ever to be staged in that country. Some can barely read, they have just two copies of the text and the leading lady is condemned to be hanged. The experience will change their lives for ever. Our Country’s Good won the Olivier Play of the Year Award following its premiere at the Royal Court in 1988.
