National Youth Theatre's 2017 REP Shows Announced
Spotlight proudly supports the National Youth Theatre’s REP season, and this year’s fantastic shows have just been announced.
The NYT’s REP programme is inspired by a traditional repertory model of theatre. It provides a free alternative to expensive formal performance training for 18 to 25 year-olds. Over the course of nine months, students are given mentorship with an industry professional, a course of training and the opportunity to perform in the West End. We spoke recently to Nathaniel Wade, just one of the alumni of last year’s rep season.
Other NYT REP company alumni from 2016 include Seraphina Beh, who is starring in EastEnders after being spotted in the REP, Kwami Odoom who has just been cast in Barber Shop Chronicles at the National Theatre, Daisy Fairclough who was in Faust X2 at the Watermill Theatre and Shiv Jalota, who was in The Grapes of Wrath at The Nuffield Theatre in Southampton. Previous alumni include Ellise Chappell (2015 REP Season) who is set to play a lead role in BBC One’s series of Poldark, and Lauren Lyle (2015 REP Season) who is filming a major role for a new Amazon series. Sope Dirisu (2013) is about to play Coriolanus at the RSC.
Mentors to REP members this year include Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), Shane Zaza (Happy Valley) as well as the Heads of Casting at the Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre.
This year the REP team will be performing at the Ambassadors Theatre from September 26th until December 8th. The shows include:
Jekyll and Hyde
In a new version by Evan Placey, this female-led adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel will interrogate the Victorian, separate spheres of domestic–public dichotomy, putting women centre stage where they are completely absent in the novella. The production will explore late nineteenth century society’s relationship to women’s destinies, properties and bodies, against the backdrop of the tumultuous drive for women’s suffrage and first wave feminism. The production will be directed by Roy Alexander Weise (JMK 2016 Winner), who most recently directed the Young Vic’s acclaimed production on The Mountaintop.
NYT present Frantic Assembly’s Othello
This year, the NYT are partnering with Frantic Assembly in a new adaptation of Othello. Set in the 21st century in Britain, Frantic Assembly focus on physical and collaborative theatre. The sex, violence and jealousy of the tragedy will be brought firmly into the modern day. The production will be directed by Simon Pittman (Associate Director, Frantic Assembly).
