While summer blockbusters ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ take cinemas by storm, here are the productions filming up and down the country that are coming next

Despite a lot of productions having been affected by the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes currently taking place in the US, a number of films and television shows in the UK and Ireland have managed to keep the ball rolling. Let’s take a look at what cast and crew around the UK are working on this summer.

‘Heads of State’

Spotlight members Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra star in this exciting new production from Amazon Studios. Although the plot is currently under wraps, the high-profile cast – including the likes of John Cena, Jack Quaid, Paddy Considine, Richard Coyle and Spotlight member Sarah Niles – make this one to look out for when it’s released. Heads of State is currently filming in London until the end of the year.

‘The Gorge’

AppleTV presents The Gorge, telling the exciting story of two dangerous young people who find a connection with each other – despite the corrupt, crime-centric world they live in. Scott Derrickson directs an exciting cast – led by Anya Taylor Joy and Miles Teller – that continues shooting in London this summer.

‘The Day of the Jackal’

Currently filming in London, the Sky/Peacock original series The Day of the Jackal also has simultaneous shoots happening in Budapest, Croatia and Austria. Inspired by the 1973 film of the same name from prolific filmmaker, Fred Zinnemann, this exciting remake of The Day of the Jackal stars Spotlight members Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch, which tells the story of the assassination attempt of Charles de Guelle, the then-president of France.

‘The Veil’

Emmy Award-winning actor Elisabeth Moss stars in this upcoming gritty mini-series about two women – one with a secret and the other trying to reveal that secret to the world, written by Steven Knight and directed by Damon Thomas and Daina Reid. Currently filming in Kent, The Veil is produced by FX and will be released on Hulu.

‘A Thousand Blows’

Also written by Steven Knight, A Thousand Blows is currently filming in and around London for the rest of the year. Starring Spotlight members Stephen Graham, Jason Tobin and Erin Doherty, this exciting new series for Disney+ tells the tale of two friends from Jamaica who fight for survival in Victorian London, where they meet experienced East End boxer, Sugar Goodson (Graham).

‘Knuckles’

From the masterminds behind Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) comes the spin-off series focusing on Sonic’s infamous foe ‘Knuckles’. Currently filming in and around the capital this summer, Knuckles boasts a stellar cast, including Idris Elba, returning to the franchise as the titular echidna. Other names currently attached to the series are Spotlight member Ellie Taylor and Hollywood legends, Stockard Channing and Christopher Lloyd.

‘Boiling Point’

Based on the 2021 film of the same name, Boiling Point (2023) extends the world from the original film whilst being overseen by writer and creator, James Cummings. Currently filming in Manchester, this thrilling series stars Steven Ogg, along with Spotlight members Hannah Traylen and Ray Panthaki. Audiences will also see the return of Spotlight member Stephen Graham after his breathtaking performance in the original film.

‘Industry (Season 3)’

After the huge success of the first two seasons, Industry (Season 3) continues production in various locations around the UK. It follows the lives of a group of young bankers and traders as they attempt to make their mark on the world. The cast is full of vibrant performances from Myha’la Herrold, and Spotlight members Marisa Abela and Harry Lawtey, among others. Produced by Bad Wolf and HBO, the first two seasons can be seen on BBC iPlayer.

There’s no question that we have a lot to look forward to over the coming months – from big budget summer blockbusters to hidden independent gems. The UK and Ireland continue to play host to some of the industry’s most exciting productions, and never fails to add more and more titles to our watchlists.
