‘Oppenheimer’ dominates the 81st annual awards with ‘Succession’ and ‘Poor Things’ among other winners
The 2024 awards season is officially underway after the Golden Globes were held on Sunday 7 January in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.
Oppenheimer picked up a total of five awards, winning the main prize of ‘Best Motion Picture’, with director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) taking home the award for ‘Best Director’. The film, a biographical depiction of the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II, also grabbed the ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ for Spotlight member Cillian Murphy’s epic lead as theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) won the ‘Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ award, with Emma Stone (Poor Things) taking home the ‘Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ award. Although beaten to ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ by Poor Things, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was recognised for the revenue it grossed with the new ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ award.
HBO’s Succession was the top TV winner, collecting awards for best drama, actress (Sarah Snook), actor (Kieran Culkin) and supporting actor (Spotlight member Matthew Macfadyen).
