Secure your professional identity on Spotlight

Choosing a professional name (or stage name) is a defining moment in any performer’s career. Use our free Actor Name Checker to ensure your identity is unique and meets Spotlight’s registration requirements. Simply enter your desired name below to see if its available.

What is a Stage Name?

A stage name is your professional identity in the industry, a distinct title that sets you apart across credits, productions, and casting platforms. Whether it’s a slight variation of your birth name or a completely new persona, your name must be unique within Spotlight and Equity to avoid confusion for casting directors. Your stage name is more than a label – it’s your personal brand.

Why is a stage name important?

In the industry, your stage name is your legal and creative trademark. Casting directors and agents rely on it for clear attribution; if two performers share a name, it creates “identity clutter” that can stall a booking or misdirect a royalty check. A distinct name ensures you are searchable and bookable, acting as the foundation of your professional reputation and ensuring your credits remain exclusively yours.

Tips for choosing a stage name

  • Keep it Accessible: Choose a name that is easy to spell and pronounce. You want casting directors to remember you and find you in databases without hesitation.

  • Reflect Your Type: Ensure the name feels authentic to your “casting type” and fits the trajectory of the roles you aim to play as your career evolves.

  • Consistency is Key: Use the same name across your Spotlight profile, CV, and showreel to build a cohesive professional brand.

  • Claim Your Space: Beyond the name checking tool, look to see if social media handles are available to keep your digital presence professional and easy to find.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got extra questions, we’ve got answers

If the Actor Name Checker shows a name is available, is it officially mine?

The Actor Name Checker is an excellent free guide to check availability, but it does not automatically reserve or guarantee your name. Every single name submission is cross-checked manually by our team during your registration or profile update.

Additionally, you may find that while an exact spelling is available, a name that sounds highly similar or uses a slight abbreviation is already taken. For this reason, we always advise having two or three backup variations in mind.

If I’m registered with Equity, do I automatically get the same name on Spotlight?

No. Spotlight and Equity are entirely separate organisations with independent databases. Neither platform can automatically reserve or hold names for the other.

We highly recommend checking your desired name on both the Spotlight Actor Name Checker and with Equity directly to ensure you can maintain consistency across the board.

If your preferred name is taken on Spotlight, you will need to submit an alternative to our team, even if Equity approved it.

I’m currently a Young Performer. Do I need to change my name?

When transferring from the Young Performer membership to the Performer membership, you will have been emailed directly if your name is not available.

If you have received this email, please contact us to change your name, as you won’t be able to reactivate your account until this has been resolved.

What are Spotlight’s rules regarding similar names or initials?

To protect performers and ensure data clarity for casting directors, Spotlight does not permit names that cause confusion. Our guidelines do not allow:

  • Similar spellings/sounds: e.g., If Jane Peal exists, Jayne Peel will not be accepted.

  • Adding initials: e.g., If Meryl Streep exists, Meryl K. Streep is not permitted.

  • Long and short forms (diminutives): e.g., If Peter Smith is registered, Pete Smith cannot be used (and vice-versa).

  • Pluralised surnames: e.g., If John Owen exists, John Owens is not allowed.

My account has expired on Spotlight; what happens to my name?

If you are a Performer member on the site, your name will be saved for 12 months from the day your account expires with us. After this time, it would be possible for someone else to use the name.
