What made you want to be an actor?
No form of art has spoken to me like the great performances from actors that my dad showed me growing up. In particular, I remember watching The Sopranos. I felt connected to Michael Imperoli’s performance of ‘Christopher’ and his struggles as he contemplated whether to leave the mob life for the potential of a different one, writing scripts. I was struggling with change in my life during that time, so it really spoke to me.
I think that’s when it really clicked for me. I wanted to be a part of that, to be able to build characters that speak to aspects of people’s lives through their own complexities, that remind them they’re not alone, like I felt I was, in the best and worst moments of our lives. It’s important now, more than ever, to use this art form to connect with people, and that’s what lies in the heart of it all for me. That’s what really fired the passion up and made me want to pursue acting seriously.
What kind of actor do you aspire to be?
Through my training, I’ve realised that the best work I’ve produced has always been the roles I’ve worked the hardest on. I want to be an actor that puts 110% into preparation and commitment each and every time, whether the project is big or small. I’m a bit of an intellectual actor in preparation and I’m a big fan of script analysis. It really helps to feel grounded when it’s time to let it all go.
Who in the industry would you like to work with?
I’d love to work with Justin Herwitz. Both La La Land and Whiplash were incredibly gorgeous pieces of art for their own reasons. I’m a lover of music, and I think Justin Herwitz is too. It would be great to work with him.
What films, shows or books are currently inspiring you?
I recently read John Harrop’s book, Acting, as part of my research for my dissertation. There are lots of passages in there that have fuelled my fire as an actor. The Bear is incredible, and Jeremy Allen White’s portrayal of ‘Carmy’ is raw and nail-biting. I can’t wait for season 4! I recently went to see Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, and there’s one scene in it that gave me goosebumps. It was incredible to watch.
