‘Barbie’ and ‘Succession’ lead the nominations for the Golden Globes 2023, plus the introduction of two new categories
Awards season is officially upon us, with the first of the major awards shows announcing their nominations to the world. The 81st Annual Golden Globes are set to take place on 7 January 2024 and this year blockbusters are sweeping the nominations.
2023 has been an outstanding year for both film and television, with record-breaking numbers flocking to cinemas on 21 July to celebrate the famous ‘Barbenheimer’ day. Audiences in their thousands swarmed local cinemas to witness the historic occasion that saw the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The phenomenon significantly boosted cinema revenue, which was still drastically recovering from the Covid lockdowns.
On the small screen, TV and streaming has seen a remarkable increase thanks to the likes of the series finale of both HBO’s Succession and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. Statistics show that more than 60% of UK households have been using streaming services in 2023.
So, it’s safe to say, the British public have been entertained this year, and with the Golden Globes kicking off the award season, we have every reason to celebrate.
Barbie and Succession lead the film and television categories with nine nominations each, whilst British productions All of Us Strangers, Wonka and Saltburn all received nominations in various categories. Netflix’s The Crown also received four nominations for both performances and production.
In a bid to celebrate the success of a wider variety of productions, a number of notable changes have been made to this year’s awards, with two new categories being introduced. For film, ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ has been added, allowing large scale box office hits such as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 the chance at an award. For television, we now have ‘Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television’, giving live format stand-up comedy specials the opportunity for award recognition, such as Chris Rock: Selective Outrage and Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love.
So, without further ado, the nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe awards are…
