Get an exclusive look at how casting directors use Spotlight. Hear why industry professionals “couldn’t do their job without it” and how they use its features to cast roles.
For many actors, Spotlight is a fundamental part of professional life. It’s the go-to platform for managing your profile, showreels and credits, but what does it look like from the other side? How do casting directors actually use Spotlight to find the right person for a role?
We had the chance to ask a room full of the top casting directors this at The Spotlight Prize. Based on their answers, it’s clear that Spotlight is more than just a directory – it’s an indispensable tool they “live on” every single day. Here are the key ways casting directors utilise the platform as part of their daily work:
Finding Actors
Casting directors like Kristina Erdely (The Brutalist, Love, Death & Robots) emphasise that Spotlight is where they go to find virtually any professional actor, no matter their age or experience level.
“Whether they’re a child actor, whether they’re a young actor, whether they are seasoned professionals, they’re all there,” Kristina states.
Spotlight is the central platform where casting directors expect to find everyone. This makes it the perfect place to promote yourself as an actor and get yourself on their radars.
Searching and Filtering
One of Spotlight’s most valuable features for casting directors is its powerful search functionality. Casting directors can use the database to search for talent based on a variety of criteria, from specific skills and experience to physical attributes.
“The search functions, the filters, all of that makes one’s life a lot easier,” says casting director Lissy Holm, (Mr Loverman, Those About to Die, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).
Each job is unique, and the platform’s advanced filters allow casting directors to quickly narrow down their options to find the perfect match for a specific role. Of course, all the searching in the world can’t help them find an actor who hasn’t added appropriate details and information to their Spotlight profile, so make sure you’ve filled yours in.
The All-in-One Information Source
Casting directors use Spotlight to get a comprehensive view of an actor’s work. The platform serves as a one-stop-shop for professionals like Andy Pryor (Doctor Who, It’s a Sin), where, as he states, they can access, “All of the information we need to find out about an actor’s work.” This includes:
- CVs: A detailed history of an actor’s professional credits.
- Showreels: Video footage showcasing an actor’s performance skills.
- Contact details: The necessary information to reach an actor or their agent.
This consolidation of information is crucial for efficiency, allowing casting directors to learn everything they need to know about an actor in one place.
Communication and Organisation
Spotlight also serves as a vital communication and organisational tool. Features like the messaging section allow casting directors to send self-tape requests and other communications to multiple actors simultaneously.
Additionally, the platform helps casting directors keep track of their work. Kristina Erdely notes that, “All my notes are there for all these 17 years. I communicate with the agents there. I couldn’t live without it.”
Events and Showcases
Casting directors also utilise Spotlight to stay informed about industry events. Spotlight’s calendar of showcases and events is a valuable resource, helping them discover new talent and stay connected with the wider acting community.
In short, for casting directors, Spotlight is far more than just software – it’s an all-encompassing tool that helps them manage their entire workflow, from initial searches and communication to long-term record-keeping.
